Production Update 10/23/17

In the past week our momentum has slowed a bit, but we were able to make progress by going to an awesome event in Durham on Thursday (10/19). We went to a panel discussion sponsored by Farm Sanctuary and Indy Week all about exposing factory farming in NC, but more importantly, discussing solutions to the problem.

The panel included Elsie Herring, a Duplin County resident who we have been trying to get in touch with since the beginning of the semester. She is a community organizer and has been fighting this issue for decades. She was so friendly and welcoming to us and gave us her contact information to come to her home in Duplin.

The panel also included Rick Dove, a senior advisor for the Waterkeeper Alliance and former Neuse Riverkeeper. He spoke about how he watched the health of the Neuse River completely deteriorate before his eyes back when hog production first came to NC in the 1990s. Also, he was one of the first people to think to look at these operations from the air, and he has spent over 3,000 hours in the air surveying CAFOs. He agreed to be interviewed and take us up in a plane for footage!

We also talked to Don Webb, a former hog farmer fro Duplin who changed his ways when he what he was inflicting on his neighbors through his farming practices. He liquidated his farm property and has since been fighting the issue. He also gave us his contact info to come interview him and have him show us around his former farm.

We've also been in contact with NC Farm Families. They replied to Jocabed's initial email and already knew about our documentary, which was super creepy. The power of Google is scary. But luckily, the woman who replied to Jocabed's inquiry for an interview seemed nice and polite, and they haven't shut us down yet.

So, with all of these new connections, the next step is to get all of this scheduled. My goal is to film all of this by Thanksgiving Break; that gives us a month. I think it is 100% doable. However, it will more than likely not line up with the syllabus for the class given the predetermined dates for the rough cut and fine cut. This is something we can discuss in class, but I hope that is okay.
